Introduction: Challenges in the Ternary Precursor Industry
The ternary precursor industry plays a crucial role in the new energy sector, powering lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems. However, its production generates large volumes of sodium sulfate-rich wastewater, posing significant environmental challenges.
Wastewater Characteristics and Environmental Impact
Manufacturing one ton of ternary precursor typically produces 15 cubic meters of mother liquor and 10 cubic meters of wash water, both containing:
- High sodium sulfate concentrations
- Ammonia nitrogen
- Trace metals
These waste streams increase treatment costs and hinder sustainable industry growth.
Innovative Solution: Bipolar Membrane Electrodialysis (BPED)
To address these issues, Quzhou Huayou partnered with Lanran Tech to deploy an innovative bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BPED) system. This technology:
- Converts sodium sulfate wastewater into reusable sulfuric acid and caustic soda
- Establishes a circular economy model
- Reduces environmental impact and operational risks
Project Outcomes and Sustainability Impact
Resource Recycling
The BPED system efficiently recovers sulfuric acid and caustic soda, reintegrating them into production for pH adjustment, precursor manufacturing, and extraction processes.
Economic Efficiency
Recovered caustic soda and sulfuric acid are reused or sold, generating significant economic value while reducing procurement costs.
Environmental Protection
The BPED solution minimizes hazardous waste discharge, cuts dependency on external acid and alkali supplies, and lowers transportation risks associated with hazardous chemicals.
