Making L-Carnitine Production Cleaner with Electrodialysis Technology

Efficient desalination is an important step in L-Carnitine production. How can manufacturers reduce salt content while minimizing chemical consumption and wastewater generation?

LANRAN’s Electrodialysis (ED) technology provides an effective approach.

In an L-Carnitine production process in Taizhou, Jiangsu, China, the intermediate solution undergoes hydrolysis and pH adjustment before entering the ED system. Using ion exchange membranes, electrodialysis separates sodium and chloride ions from the target solution.

The process is straightforward: the desalinated stream proceeds to three-effect evaporation and subsequent refining, while the concentrated stream enters MVR evaporation crystallization for volume reduction and salt separation.

What makes this process valuable?

  • High desalination efficiency and controllable operating parameters.
  • Simple process configuration and suitability for continuous operation.
  • Reduced chemical consumption and improved water resource utilization.
  • Over 90% reduction in wastewater generation.

By integrating electrodialysis with evaporation and crystallization, LANRAN helps optimize material treatment and supports cleaner, more resource-efficient production.

Project Data:

Treatment capacity: 2.3 m³/h

Conductivity: ≤100 μS/cm

Energy consumption: 76 kWh/t

Overall current efficiency: 62.8%
